Αρκετές προϊστορικές τοποθεσίες στην Ελλάδα αποκαλύπτουν ότι οι ανθρώπινοι πρόγονοί μας κυνηγούσαν ιπποπόταμους και ελέφαντες μεταξύ 280.000 και 700.000 ετών πριν. Η παλαιότερη τοποθεσία απωθεί την παλαιότερη γνωστή παρουσία ανθρωπίνων στην περιοχή έως και 250.000 χρόνια. Δεν είναι ξεκάθαρο ποιος αρχαίος ανθρώπινος (ένας όρος που περιλαμβάνει τους ανθρώπους και τους προγόνους μας) χρησιμοποιούσε την τοποθεσία, αλλά οι ερευνητές υποπτεύονται ότι επρόκειτο για αρχαϊκό Homo sapiens.

Όπως αναφέρει η Kristina Killgrove στο Live Science: “Σε απόσταση περίπου 200 χιλιομέτρων νοτιοδυτικά της Αθήνας, το Λεκανοπέδιο της Μεγαλόπολης στην Αρκαδία φιλοξενεί ένα από τα μεγαλύτερα ορυχεία λιγνίτη στην Ελλάδα. Αν και οι αρχαιολόγοι γνώριζαν εδώ και δεκαετίες ότι η τοποθεσία φιλοξενούσε αρχαία απολιθώματα, ελάχιστες στοχευμένες ανασκαφές είχαν πραγματοποιηθεί. Πρόσφατα, όμως, το Ελληνικό Υπουργείο Πολιτισμού & Αθλητισμού και η Αμερικανική Σχολή Κλασικών Σπουδών στην Αθήνα ξεκίνησαν μια πενταετή ανασκαφή για να κατανοήσουν καλύτερα το πλαίσιο των χώρων της Μεγαλόπολης.

Η εξορυκτική δραστηριότητα αποκάλυψε πέντε νέες τοποθεσίες στη λεκάνη, οι οποίες «εξέθεσαν τα απολιθωμένα ιζήματα σε πολύ μεγαλύτερο βάθος, αποκαλύπτοντας έτσι παλαιότερα υπολείμματα», είπε στο Live η Κατερίνα Χαρβάτη , παλαιοανθρωπολόγος στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Tübingen στη Γερμανία και επικεφαλής του έργου. Η πιο πρόσφατη τοποθεσία, το Choremi 7, που χρονολογείται πριν από περίπου 280.000 χρόνια, έδωσε λίθινα εργαλεία καθώς και οστά ελαφιών με ενδείξεις κομμένων σημαδιών. Ο Τριπόταμος 4, ηλικίας 400.000 ετών, είχε μεγάλη συγκέντρωση λίθινων εργαλείων και στοιχεία για νέες μεθόδους επεξεργασίας πέτρας σε σύγκριση με παλαιότερες τοποθεσίες. Οι τοποθεσίες αυτές είναι σημαντικές για την κατανόηση της τεχνολογικής εξέλιξης της Κατώτερης Παλαιολιθικής περιόδου (πριν από 3,3 εκατομμύρια έως 300.000 χρόνια), σύμφωνα με ανακοίνωση του υπουργείου Πολιτισμού.

Σε μια τοποθεσία που ονομάζεται Marathousa 2 που χρονολογείται πριν από 450.000 χρόνια, οι ερευνητές ανακάλυψαν στοιχεία ότι αρχαίοι ανθρώπινοι συγγενείς σκότωναν και πιθανώς έτρωγαν ιπποπόταμους, καθώς μέρος ενός σκελετού ιπποπόταμου είχε σημάδια κοπής από πέτρινα εργαλεία. Μια κοντινή τοποθεσία, η Μαραθούσα 1, δείχνει στοιχεία σφαγής ελεφάντων.

«Τα κομμένα οστά ιπποπόταμου από τη Μαραθούσα 2, τα οποία βρέθηκαν επίσης μαζί με ένα λιθικό τεχνούργημα, είναι τα μόνα τέτοια ευρήματα από το Μέσο Πλειστόκαινο της νοτιοανατολικής Ευρώπης», είπε ο Χαρβάτι. Η ομάδα διαπίστωσε ότι η εκμετάλλευση μεγαπανίδων ήταν πιθανότατα κοινή κατά τη διάρκεια αυτής της χρονικής περιόδου.

Περίπου 230 πόδια (70 μέτρα) κάτω από την επιφάνεια, η ομάδα ανακάλυψε τη θέση της Κυπαρισσίας 4. Χρονολογείται πριν από 700.000 χρόνια, είναι ο παλαιότερος αρχαιολογικός χώρος από την Κάτω Παλαιολιθική εποχή στην Ελλάδα. Οι ερευνητές βρήκαν πολυάριθμα πέτρινα εργαλεία καθώς και υπολείμματα εξαφανισμένων ειδών γιγάντιων ελαφιών, ιπποπόταμων, ρινόκερων, ελέφαντα και μακάκων. Όταν οι παγετώνες κάλυψαν μεγάλο μέρος της Ευρώπης κατά τη διάρκεια μιας μεγάλης εποχής παγετώνων μεταξύ 500.000 και 300.000 ετών πριν, αυτή η περιοχή θα ήταν απαλλαγμένη από πάγους.

«Η έρευνά μας για την ανακατασκευή του παλαιοπεριβάλλοντος της λεκάνης έδειξε ότι θα λειτουργούσε ως καταφύγιο κατά τη διάρκεια των συνθηκών της Εποχής των Παγετώνων», είπε ο Χαρβάτι, «επιτρέποντας σε πληθυσμούς ζώων και φυτών – αλλά και σε ομάδες ανθρωπίνων – να επιβιώσουν σε σκληρούς παγετώνες όταν θα είχαν εξαφανίστηκε από τα βόρεια μέρη της ευρωπαϊκής ηπείρου».

Οι «εξαιρετικές και εξαιρετικά ασυνήθιστες συνθήκες διατήρησης» στη λεκάνη της Μεγαλόπολης σημαίνουν ότι η ομάδα ανακτά όχι μόνο πέτρινα εργαλεία και απολιθώματα αλλά και υπολείμματα μικρών ζώων, ξύλου, φυτικών υπολειμμάτων, ακόμη και εντόμων, σύμφωνα με τον Χαρβάτι. Η λεκάνη έχει παράσχει στοιχεία που εκτείνονται σχεδόν σε ολόκληρο το μέσο Πλειστόκαινο, μια σημαντική ανακάλυψη δεδομένου ότι η νοτιοανατολική Ευρώπη είναι σχετικά ανεξερεύνητη για αυτήν τη χρονική περίοδο. «Η λεκάνη της Μεγαλόπολης αποτελεί επομένως ένα κρίσιμο κομμάτι του παζλ της ανθρώπινης εξέλιξης στην Ευρώπη», είπε ο Χαρβάτι.

Η πλήρης ανακοίνωση του υπουργείου Πολιτισμού της Ελλάδας

Ολοκληρώθηκε το εγκεκριμένο πενταετές πρόγραμμα επιφανειακής και γεωαρχαιολογικής έρευνας στη Μεγαλόπολη Αρκαδίας με σκοπό την ανεύρεση παλαιολιθικών θέσεων στην περιοχή του λιγνιτορυχείου της Μεγαλόπολης, καθώς και τη μελέτη και αναπαράσταση των παλαιο-περιβαλλοντικών συνθηκών και της γεωλογικής εξέλιξης της λεκάνης και της παλαιο-λίμνης στην οποία δημιουργήθηκαν οι λιγνίτες.

Οι πέντε καινούριες θέσεις που βρέθηκαν στο λιγνιτορυχείο της Μεγαλόπολης διασώζουν πολιτισμικά και πανιδικά κατάλοιπα σε στρωματογραφική συνάφεια και προσφέρουν μια μοναδική ευκαιρία διαχρονικής διερεύνησης της ανθρώπινης συμπεριφοράς, για μια σημαντική περίοδο στην ιστορία της ανθρώπινης εξέλιξης και σε μια περιοχή που έως τώρα είχε ελάχιστα ερευνηθεί.

Η προκαταρκτική μελέτη των παλαιοπεριβαλλοντικών και παλαιοκλιματικών δεικτών δείχνουν ότι όλες οι θέσεις έχουν βρεθεί σε περιβάλλοντα παγετωδών περιόδων, και μάλιστα εντοπίζονται χρονολογικά σχεδόν στο σύνολο των παγετωδών περιόδων του Μέσου Πλειστόκαινου. Τα ευρήματα αυτά υποδεικνύουν ότι η λεκάνη της Μεγαλόπολης αποτέλεσε ένα από τα νοτιότερα οικολογικά καταφύγια της Ευρώπης κατά τη διάρκεια των παγετωδών περιόδων.

Το πρόγραμμα αποτελεί έρευνα συνεργασίας της Εφορείας Παλαιοανθρωπολογίας-Σπηλαιολογίας (ΕΠΣ) και της Αμερικανικής Σχολής Κλασικών Σπουδών (ΑΣΚΣ) υπό τη διεύθυνση της Δρ. Ε. Παναγοπούλου-Καράμπελα (εκ μέρους της ΕΠΣ), του Δρ. Π. Καρκάνα (ΑΣΚΣ) και της Καθ. Κ. Χαρβάτη (Πανεπιστήμιο Tübingen). Το πρόγραμμα χρηματοδοτήθηκε από το Ευρωπαϊκό Συμβούλιο Έρευνας (Πρόγραμμα “Human Evolution at the Crossroads”).

Η συστηματική επιφανειακή έρευνα των τεχνητών πρανών και τομών του λιγνιτορυχείου που έχουν δημιουργηθεί από τις εξορυκτικές εργασίες της ΔΕΗ είχε ως αποτέλεσμα τον εντοπισμό πέντε νέων αρχαιολογικών θέσεων, στις οποίες περιλαμβάνεται η παλαιότερη χρονολογημένη αρχαιολογική θέση της Κατώτερης Παλαιολιθικής στην Ελλάδα (περίπου 700 χιλιάδες χρόνια πριν), καθώς και η αρχαιότερη Μέση Παλαιολιθική θέση στην Ελλάδα και μια από τις παλαιότερες στην Ευρώπη (περίπου 280 χιλιάδες χρόνια πριν). Για τη χρονολόγηση των θέσεων χρησιμοποιήθηκε μια πλειάδα μεθόδων και νέων τεχνικών, συμπεριλαμβανομένων του παλαιομαγνητισμού, της οπτικής φωταύγειας, του συντονισμού ηλεκτρονικής στροφορμής, της ραδιενεργούς σειράς του ουρανίου και των κοσμογενών ραδιονουκλιδίων, καθώς και βιοστρωματογραφικές και λιθοστρωματογραφικές αναλύσεις και συσχετίσεις.

Η παλαιότερη θέση που εντοπίστηκε είναι τα Κυπαρίσσια 4, η οποία χρονολογείται περίπου 700 χιλιάδες χρόνια πριν και βρίσκεται 70 περίπου μέτρα κάτω από την σημερινή επιφάνεια του εδάφους (πριν την έναρξη των εργασιών του ορυχείου). Η θέση περιέχει λίθινα τέχνεργα της Κατώτερης Παλαιολιθικής, μαζί με κατάλοιπα εξαφανισμένων ζώων, όπως γιγαντιαίου ελαφιού (Praemegaceros), ιπποπόταμου, ρινόκερου, ελέφαντα, καθώς και ενός δοντιού του κερκοπίθηκου Μακάκου.

Η στρωματογραφικά νεότερη, κοντινή θέση Κυπαρίσσια 3 απέδωσε κυρίως οστά ελεφάντων που σχετίζονται με λίθινα εργαλεία. Στη θέση Μαραθούσα 2 που χρονολογείται περίπου στα 450 χιλιάδες χρόνια πριν, βρέθηκε τμήμα σκελετού ιπποποτάμου με ίχνη κοπής σε συνδυασμό με υπολείμματα λίθινων εργαλείων, και αποτελεί ένα σπάνιο παράδειγμα εκμετάλλευσης ιπποποτάμου στην Ευρώπη του Πλειστόκαινου.

Σημαντική είναι η θέση Τριπόταμος 4, η οποία βρίσκεται 15 περίπου μέτρα κάτω από τη σημερινή επιφάνεια. Η θέση χρονολογείται περίπου στα 400 χιλιάδες χρόνια πριν από σήμερα και χαρακτηρίζεται από σχετικά μεγάλη συγκέντρωση λίθινων εργαλείων, τα οποία παρουσιάζουν νέα στοιχεία στις τεχνικές κατεργασίας του λίθου σε σχέση με τις παλαιότερες θέσεις, καθιστώντας τη θέση σημαντικό σημείο στις τεχνολογικές εξελίξεις της ύστερης Κατώτερης Παλαιολιθικής.

Τέλος, η θέση Χωρέμη 7 βρέθηκε στο ανώτερο τμήμα της γεωλογικής ακολουθίας, 8 περίπου μέτρα κάτω από την σημερινή επιφάνεια και χρονολογείται στα 280 χιλιάδες χρόνια περίπου. Η λιθοτεχνία της θέσης περιλαμβάνει τυπολογικά και τεχνολογικά χαρακτηριστικά της Μέσης Παλαιολιθικής. Το πανιδικό σύνολο της θέσης αποτελείται κυρίως από θραύσματα οστών κυρίως ελαφοειδών, ορισμένα από τα οποία φέρουν ίχνη ανθρώπινης επεξεργασίας.
