Σε παλαιότερα χρόνια, όταν οι πέρτιτζοι αφθονούσαν, οι χωρικοί συνήθιζαν να μαζεύουν τα αυγά τους και να τα χρησιμοποιούν στις φλαούνες, πιστεύοντας πως έτσι αυτές γίνονταν κόκκινες. Πίστευαν ακόμη ότι τα μωρά που ρουφούσαν αυγά του πέρτικου γίνονταν καλοφωνάρικα.
Συνήθως οι πέρτιτζοι γεννούν δυο φορές τον χρόνο. Το αρσενικό διαφέρει από το θηλυκό όχι από το χρώμα, αλλά από το κκότσιν (σπηρούνι) που έχει και στις δυο του κνήμες, ενώ η θηλυκή πέρτικα έχει μόνο στη μια της κνήμη, εμφανίζεται δε κατά το δεύτερο έτος της ηλικίας της. Εδώ αναφέρουμε παρενθετικά, ότι το επίθετο κκότσης λέγεται μεταφορικώς και για τους ηλικιωμένους που θέλουν να εμφανίζονται ως ερωτύλοι (χρησιμοποιείται ως ονειδιστικός χαρακτηρισμός).
Όπως αναφέρεται και πιο πάνω, για τον κυπριακό λαό τα κυριότερα χαρακτηριστικά της πέρτικας είναι τα όμορφά της χρώματα, τα πλουμιά της, και η λεβέντικη περπατησιά της. Γι’ αυτά της τα γνωρίσματα λέγεται και πέρτικα πλουμιστή ή περτίτζ΄ιν πλουμιστόν ή κοτσ΄ινοσ΄ειλού ή ασπροβουκκού. Για την ωραία και λεβέντισσα κοπέλα λέγεται:
Μια πέρτικα, μια πέρτικα,
που παρπατεί λεβέντικα.
Το κρέας του πέρτικου είναι πολύ εύγευστο, αναφέρεται δε και σε πολλά κυπριακά ακριτικά έπη και άσματα, όπως στην Αροδαφνούσα, που λέει στις βάγιες της για να τις πείσει να της αποκαλύψουν την ερωμένη του ρήγα, με σκοπό να την εξοντώσει:
Τζ’αι πέτε μου το βάγιες μου τζι’ εγιώνι εν σας δέρνω
ούλλομ περτίτζ’ια τζ’αί λαούς εγιώ να σας ταΐζω…
Εξάλλου στον Σαρατζ’ηνόν, η καλή (η αγαπημένη) του Κωσταντά, καλωσορίζοντας τους ξένους της, αναφέρει:
Καλώς ήρταν οι ξένοι μου, να φαν˙ να πκιουν μιτά μας,
να φάσιν τ’ άδρη του λαού, να φαν οφτόν περτίτζ’ιν.
να πκιούν γλυκόποτον κρασίν…
Παρόμοιοι στίχοι απαντώνται και στο έπος του Διγενή Ακρίτα, όπου στο τραπέζι καλείται ο ίδιος ο Χάροντας. Στο ίδιο έπος, πάλι, τον Σαρατζηνόν, μόλις «ἀνέφανεν νἄρκεται ὁ Κωσταντᾶς», αναφέρεται:
Τζ’αι να σου τζ’αι τον Κωσταντάν του κάμπου τζ’ αναφαίνει,
περτίτζ’ιν άβουρκονμ πλουμίν της κάλης του το φέρνει…
Η φωνή της πέρτικας — το κελάιδημά της — λέγεται κακκάρισμαν, αναφέρεται δε και σε ένα άλλο έπος, τον Κάουραν, όπου περιγράφεται το πόσο μεγάλος ήταν ο φοβερός «Κάουρας»:
Τζ’αι μέσα στο ρουθούνιν του, ψουμάδες εφουρνίζαν,
τζ’αι πάνω εις την ράσ΄ην του, περτίτζ’ια κακκαρίζαν…
Ακόμη και στο λαϊκό δίστιχο αναφέρεται:
Περτίτζ’ι ν μου κακκαριστόν, που γέρνεις το λαόνιν
πε μου πού πίννεις το νερόν, να ρτω να πκιω τζ’ εγιώνι.
Για το κόκκινο ράμφος και τα κόκκινα πόδια, καθώς και τη φωλιά της πέρτικας υπάρχει και ο ακόλουθος μύθος, πολύ γνωστός στα χωριά της Πιτσιλιάς:
Οι Τούρτζ’οι ετρέχαν τον Άην Άκουφον να τον ησκοτώσουν τζ΄ εκοντοφτάσαν τον τζ’αμαί, σε μιαν αρκατζ’ιάν, που ’τουν έναν πολλά μεάλον καβάτζ’ιν. Τότες ο Άϊος επαρακάλεσεν τον Θεόν, τζι’ άννοιξεν η κόρμη του καβατζ’ιού τζ’ εχώστην μέσα. Οι Τούρτζ’οι εγυρεύκαν τον τζ’αμαί γυρόν μά ’ν τον εύρισκαν. Ένας πέρτικος όμως καρτζ’ιν πά στον όχτον της αρκατζ’ιάς άρκεψεν τζι’ εκακκάριζέν τους, -κάκ-καβάκ, κάκ-καβάκ – πααίννετε στο καβάτζ’ιν – πααίννετε στό καβάτζ’ιν, τζ’ι οι Τούρτζ’οι εκαταλάβαν, τζι’ εκόψαν το καβάτζ’ιν, ηύραν τόν Άιον τζ’ εσφάξαν τον τζι’ εφύασιν. Ο πέρτικος ύστερις εκατέητζ’εν τζ’αμαί στο καβάτζ’ιν να πκη νερόν τζ’ι επάτησεν μεσ’ το γαίμαν του Αΐου τζι’ εκοτσ’ινίσαν τα πόδκια του, τζ’ι άμα έσσ’υψεν να πκη νερόν εκοτσ’ίνισεν τζι’ η μούττη του τζ’αι που τότες έμειναν κότσ’ινα.
