Νεκροί εντοπίστηκαν οι δύο πιλότοι του γερασμένου Canadair που συνετρίβη στην Κάρυστο, ενώ επιχειρούσε στην κατάσβεση φωτιάς.
Πρόκειται για τον κυβερνήτη Σμηναγό Χρήστο Μουλά (34 ετών) και τον συγκυβερνήτη Ανθυποσμηναγό Περικλή Στεφανίδη (27 ετών), χειριστές της 355 Μοίρας Τακτικών Μεταφορών της 112 Πτέρυγα Μάχης που απογειώθηκαν από το αεροδρόμιο της Αγχιάλου για να βοηθήσουν στην κατάσβεση της πυρκαγιάς.
Με θάρρος και αυταπάρνηση οι δύο αξιωματικοί της Πολεμικής Αεροπορίας ρίχτηκαν στη μάχη να σώσουν τους συμπολίτες τους και τις περιουσίες τους από τις φλόγες, ωστόσο άφησαν την τελευταία τους πνοή εν ώρα καθήκοντος, με τα αίτια της τραγωδίας να μπαίνουν πλέον στο μικροσκόπιο.
