Τα τρυγόνια έχουν εμφανιστεί στην τέχνη και τον πολιτισμό εδώ και χιλιάδες χρόνια. Η ομορφιά, το τραγούδι και η συμπεριφορά τους ενέπνευσαν Αρχαίους Έλληνες και Ρωμαίους, ποιητές, μοντέρνους μουσικούς και ζωγράφους. Ίσως λόγω των γοητευτικών, και τρυφερών εκφράσεων στοργής τους, υπήρξαν από καιρό σύμβολα αγάπης.
Ένα ρομαντικό πουλί
Στις 19 Μαΐου 2018, το τρυγόνι απολάμβανε μια στιγμή πολιτιστικής αναγνώρισης σε μία από τις αναγνώσεις στο γάμο του Πρίγκιπα Χάρι και του Μεγκάν Μάρκλ, που παρακολούθησαν εκατομμύρια άνθρωποι σε όλο τον κόσμο. Το κείμενο, που έχει ληφθεί από το άσμα του Σολομώντα στην Παλαιά Διαθήκη, περιγράφει το πουλί ως κοπάδι της άνοιξης.
«Ο χειμώνας έχει περάσει, η βροχή τελείωσε και έφυγε. Τα λουλούδια εμφανίζονται στη γη. ήρθε η ώρα του τραγουδιού, και η φωνή του τρυγονιού ακούγεται στη γη μας. “
Τα τρυγόνια και οι γάμοι είναι ο τέλειος συνδυασμός: αυτά τα πουλιά είχαν συχνά ρομαντικές σχέσεις, και στην ποίηση συνήθως συνδέονται με πιστότητα και εμπιστοσύνη.
Η Ρωμαϊκή θεότητα Fides απεικονίζεται συχνά να κρατάει ένα τρυγόνι: ήταν η θεά της καλής πίστης (όπως στον λατινικό όρο bona fide). Στην ελληνική μυθολογία, τα πουλιά τράβηξαν το άρμα της Αφροδίτης, της θεάς του έρωτα.
Ο Chaucer, στο Parlement of Foules του, ανέφερε «το παντρεμένο τρυγόνι με την καρδιά της αληθινή».
Και ο ποιητής Sir Philip Sidney έγραψε:
«Ο χρόνος θα λειτουργήσει ό, τι κανείς δεν ξέρει Ο
χρόνος μας αποδεικνύει το θέμα.
Με τον καιρό ακόμα η αγάπη μεγαλώνει
στο πιστό τρυγόνι »
Τα τρυγόνια δεν θεωρούνταν απλώς αφοσιωμένοι, μονογαμικοί συνεργάτες. Εάν ένα από το ζεύγος πέθαινε, το άλλο πιστευόταν ότι θρηνούσε, και ίσως ποτέ να μην συνδεόταν ξανά με άλλο πουλί.
Ο συν-κυβερνήτης της Φλωρεντίας, ο Giuliano de ‘Medici δολοφονήθηκε το 1478, σε ηλικία 25 ετών. Ένα μεταθανάτιο πορτρέτο του από τον Μποτιτσέλι περιλαμβάνει ένα τρυγόνι.
Ο Γουίλιαμ Σαίξπηρ έγραφε συχνά για τα τρυγόνια (μερικές φορές το αποκαλούσαν «χελώνες»), μερικές φορές για να συμβολίσει την αγάπη και την αφοσίωση:
Βασιλιάς Ερρίκος VI: «ένα ζευγάρι αγαπημένων χελωνών που δεν μπορούσαν να ζουν μέρα ή νύχτα»

Άνοιξη και Χειμώνας (ένα ποίημα): «Όταν τα τρυγόνια περπατούν, κοράκια, και ξημερώματα, και τα κορίτσια λευκανίζουν τα καλοκαιρινά τους μπλουζάκια», ο
Σαίξπηρ έγραψε επίσης «The Phoenix and the Turtle», ένα ποίημα που δημοσιεύθηκε το 1601. Το ποίημα έχει ερμηνευτεί ως αλληγορία για το θάνατο της ιδανικής αγάπης.
Άλλοι συγγραφείς που εμπνέονται από τα τρυγόνια είναι οι Anne Bronte, Carol Ann Duffy και Edgar Allen Poe.
Τα τρυγόνια εξακολουθούν να αποτελούν σύμβολο αγάπης σήμερα. Ο Cockney rhyming slang υιοθέτησε επίσης το «τρυγόνι » που σημαίνει αγάπη . Και σε μια συγκινητική σκηνή στο Home Alone 2, που κυκλοφόρησε το 1992, ο Κέβιν παρουσιάζει ένα από τα στολίδια του τρυγονιού στο Bird Lady, λέγοντας ότι καθώς έχουν το ένα, θα είναι φίλοι για πάντα.
