Οι Κυνηγετικοί Σύλλογοι είναι τα κύτταρα των κυνηγών στην κοινωνία. Είναι ο καθρέφτης μας. Ίσως κάποιοι έχουν στο μυαλό τους ότι μόνο οι μεγάλοι σύλλογοι προσφέρουν στην φύση και στην κοινωνία. Ίσως γιατί δεν παρουσιάζονται στα έντυπα τόσο πολύ οι σύλλογοι της επαρχίας. Κάτι τέτοιο δεν συμβαίνει με τον στον Κ.Σ. Χρυσούπολης. Που μπορεί να μην έχει πολλά μέλη, ούτε πολλές άδειες σε σχέση με το παρελθόν ή άλλους συλλόγους, έχει όμως να αναδείξει ένα πλούσιο περιβαλλοντικό και κοινωνικό έργο. Ας κάνουμε μια σύντομη αναδρομή.

Ο Κυνηγετικός Σύλλογος Χρυσούπολης με την ονομασία  «Άρτεμις» ιδρύθηκε το έτος 1977 και είναι ο τρίτος στο νομό Καβάλας, μεταξύ αυτών της Καβάλας και της Ελευθερούπολης. Στεγάζεται σε ιδιόκτητο χώρο (από το 1994) στην οδό Π. Τζιβελεκίδη 7, στη Χρυσούπολη. Αποτελείται από 2.000 εγγεγραμμένα μέλη, τα 750 από αυτά είναι ενεργά. Στην αρμοδιότητα του έχει όλη την επαρχία Νέστου με τρία Καταφύγια Άγριας Ζωής, το Κεστενέ – Νταγ, στην ορεινή περιοχή του Δήμου Ορεινού, το Γκιόλτζικ στην ορεινή περιοχή του Αγίου Κοσμά, και το Κοτζά – Ορμάν στην πεδινή περιοχή στο Δέλτα του ποταμού Νέστου. Αποτελείται από 7μελές Διοικητικό Συμβούλιο με τριμελή Ελεγκτική Επιτροπή, τα οποία εκλέγονται ανά διετία. Στο δυναμικό του έχει μία γραμματέα καθ’ όλο το έτος κι έναν εποχιακό θηροφύλακα για όλη την κυνηγετική περίοδο, καθώς και έναν Ομοσπονδιακό θηροφύλακα, σε μόνιμη βάση διορισμένο από την Κομάθ, με έδρα τον Κυνηγετικό Σύλλογο Χρυσούπολης. Όλα τα μέλη με το Δ.Σ υπάγονται στην ομάδα Εθελοντισμού της Γενικής Γραμματείας Πολιτικής Προστασίας, με κατάταξη στη Δασοπυρόσβεση – Δασοπροστασία, της επαρχίας. Όποτε λοιπόν, υπάρχει ανάγκη παρέμβασης, βρίσκονται παρόντες στη δασοπυρόσβεση, όπως έχει γίνει επανειλημμένα σε συνεργασία με την Πυροσβεστική Υπηρεσία Χρυσούπολης, αλλά και στη δασοπροστασία σε συνεργασία με την Ομοσπονδιακή Θηροφυλακή, κάνοντας τακτικές περιπόλους με τα τζιπ.

Μία από τις σημαντικότερες δραστηριότητες του συλλόγου ήταν η ίδρυση ενός Πυροφυλακίου – Παρατηρητηρίου στην περιοχή του Πλαταμώνα στον ορεινό όγκο του Δήμου Ορεινού. Μετά από αίτηση για την τοποθέτηση του πυροφυλακίου, ο σύλλογος προμηθεύτηκε την καινούρια λυόμενη κατασκευή και την τοποθέτησε. Το πυροφυλάκιο – παρατηρητήριο σκοπό έχει να εξυπηρετεί την θηροφύλαξη, την Πυροσβεστική σε περίπτωση ανάγκης και οποιονδήποτε περαστικό – επισκέπτη, είτε για ανάπαυση είτε για αναψυχή. Ο κυνηγετικός Σύλλογος Χρυσούπολης αγόρασε με νόμιμες διαδικασίες  ένα καινούριο τζιπ, αφού λόγω παλαιότητας πούλησε το προηγούμενο, καθώς σκοπός του συλλόγου είναι να βελτιώνει συνεχώς της συνθήκες της θηροφύλαξης. Επίσης, μία δραστηριότητα του συλλόγου, που έγινε θεσμός εδώ και πολλά χρόνια, είναι τα ταΐσματα θηραμάτων στα Καταφύγια άγριας ζωής, κατά τους χειμερινούς μήνες που το ψύχος και οι συνθήκες κάνουν δυσκολότερη την επιβίωση των ειδών της άγριας πανίδας που συχνάζουν στην περιοχή του ποταμού Νέστου, όπως αγριόχοιροι, αγριόπαπιες κ.ά. Σε συνεργασία με το Δασαρχείο Καβάλας οι κυνηγοί αναλαμβάνουν να εμπλουτίσουν τις εστίες και τα περάσματα των θηραμάτων, με τόνους σπόρων καλαμποκιού. Μιας και ο λόγος για σπορές, ο σύλλογος πραγματοποιεί και σπορές δασικών εκτάσεων, εντός του καταφυγίου στο παραποτάμιο δάσος, σπορές καλαμποκιού, ηλίανθου, τριφυλλιού και ρεβιθιού. Εδώ, πρέπει να τονίσω την σκοπιμότητα της συγκεκριμένης φιλοθηραματικής δραστηριότητας, που είναι ο εμπλουτισμός της ευρύτερης περιοχής με τροφή που ενισχύει την καλή διαβίωση και τον πολλαπλασιασμό πολλών θηραμάτων, με πρωτεύον θήραμα τον κολχικό φασιανό, ένα προστατευόμενο είδος από την Ε.Ε και τη δασική νομοθεσία. Πέρυσι ο σύλλογος προχώρησε σε μελέτη σχετικά με τη συνέχιση της βελτίωσης της διάσωσης και του εμπλουτισμού του κολχικού φασιανού, μελέτη η οποία έχει εγκριθεί από το Δασαρχείο Καβάλας. Ήδη από το 2004 ο Κυνηγετικός Σύλλογος Χρυσούπολης είχε διοργανώσει ημερίδα για τη διάσωση του κολχικού φασιανού. Μία εκδήλωση, με τεράστια επιτυχία, πολύ ενδιαφέρον από όλους για την διάσωση και προστασία του κολχικού φασιανού. Οι δενδροφυτέυσεις δασικών εκτάσεων είναι συνεχείς από τα μέλη του συλλόγου, με σημαντικότερη αυτή που είχε γίνει πριν από μερικά χρόνια, στις 21 Μαρτίου του 2005, παγκόσμια ημέρα Δασοπονίας, όπου το Δ.Σ του συλλόγου και τα μέλη σε συνεργασία με το Δασαρχείο Καβάλας, φύτεψαν 950 δενδρύλλια ποικιλιών Ιτιάς – Φράξου – Σφενδάμου, εντός της περίφραξης που οριοθετεί το παραποτάμιο δάσος. Πλούσιο έργο ακόμη παρουσιάζει ο σύλλογος και στις διοργανώσεις εορταστικών εκδηλώσεων, με σημαντικότερες τις γιορτές του καλοκαιριού, όπου από το 2001 και κάθε χρόνο παίρνει μέρος ως Κυνηγετικός Σύλλογος Χρυσούπολης , στις 4ήμερες εκδηλώσεις «ΕΛΕΥΘΕΡΙΑ» , σε πλατεία της πόλης. Στις αρχές Ιουνίου, κάθε χρόνο, μαζί με τον Κυνηγετικό Σύλλογο Καβάλας συμμετέχει στη γιορτή του δάσους, που γίνεται στην περιοχή «Καστανιές» Ελαφοχωρίου στο Καστανόδασος. Τέλος, άξιος αναφοράς είναι και ο ετήσιος χορός Αποκριάς  του συλλόγου, κάθε Φεβρουάριο μαζί με την κοπή της καθιερωμένης πίτας, στον οποίο συμμετέχουν μαζί όλοι οι τοπικοί φορείς, τα εμπορικά καταστήματα και πλήθος απλών πολιτών. Πολλοί εθελοντές του συλλόγου  συμμετέχουν κάθε Απρίλιο στην πανελλήνια δράση καθαριότητας ( Let’s do it Greece)  στον ποταμό Νέστο, που διοργανώνει ο Δήμος Νέστου. Επειδή, τα μέλη του συλλόγου  έχουν σκοπό να προστατεύσουν με κάθε τρόπο και κάθε τίμημα το περιβάλλον, ο σύλλογος εδώ και καιρό πήρε την πρωτοβουλία και ανέλαβε την κατασκευή και τοποθέτηση 10 μεταλλικών κάδων, για τη συλλογή χημικών αποβλήτων. Τη διακομιδή και την επίβλεψη των κάδων έχει αναλάβει επίσης ο σύλλογος, χωρίς όμως να επαναπαύονται τα μέλη του μετά από αυτή την προσφορά στην τοπική κοινωνία της Χρυσούπολης. Έτσι, δέκα εθελοντές του συλλόγου καθαρίζουν την λιμνοθάλασσα Αγιάσματος, του Δήμου Νέστου, περισυλλέγοντας τα απορρίμματα.

Κλείνοντας να τονίσω ότι πρωτεύον στόχος του συλλόγου, ως ομάδα και ως σωματείο, είναι η προστασία της χλωρίδας και της πανίδας, σ’ έναν ατελέσφορο αγώνα ενάντια σε οτιδήποτε και οποιονδήποτε επιδιώκει την υποβάθμιση, καταστροφή ή εκμετάλλευσή τους. Επιβάλλεται, λοιπόν, η ενεργός συμμετοχή και προσπάθεια για την προστασία και αναβάθμιση του φυσικού βασιλείου από όλους εμάς, συνειδητοποιώντας ότι έχουμε ένα μερίδιο ευθύνης που μας αναλογεί, για να μοιραστούμε στη συνέχεια τη χαρά της προσφοράς και της ευημερίας στο δάσος, στο βουνό, στη θάλασσα και στον κάμπο που αγαπάμε και υποστηρίζουμε.
